Shuttleworth founded Thawte Consulting in 1995, a currently running company which specialized in digital certificates and Internet security. In 2002, he became the first African to travel to space as a space tourist. He lives on the Isle of Man and holds dual citizenship from South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Education

The Shuttleworth Foundation was established in 2001 to promote education and technology in Africa. It gives annual grants to fellows for projects that include the development of low-cost 3D-printed medical supplies, such as the $3 stethoscope.
