Dr. Aditya Jha, a Nepalese-Canadian entrepreneur and philanthropist, has made a global mark through his dedication to business success and his passionate philanthropic efforts.

Dr. Aditya Jha’s  journey from a humble village in Nepal to becoming one of Canada’s most respected figures is a testament to his commitment to creating opportunities for underserved communities. A recipient of the Order of Canada, Dr. Jha's story is one of entrepreneurial triumph paired with a deep sense of responsibility toward society.

His entrepreneurial journey from Nepal to Canada

Dr. Jha's early life in southern Nepal provided a foundation of resilience and a desire for knowledge. His father’s legal career and his family's values shaped Dr. Jha’s belief in giving back to society. After moving to Canada in the 1990s, Dr. Jha quickly rose through the corporate ranks at Bell Canada, becoming the general manager of ebusiness and product marketing.

In 1999, Dr. Jha co-founded Isopia Inc., a software company that grew rapidly and was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2001 for more than $100 million. This successful exit allowed Dr. Jha to invest in diverse ventures, from IT services to manufacturing, including the turnaround of Karma Candy, a chocolate factory in Ontario that he saved from closure. Dr. Jha’s entrepreneurial success is notable not only for the wealth it generated but also for the hundreds of jobs it saved, reflecting his deep commitment to improving the lives of those around him.

Building businesses with purpose

Dr. Jha’s business ventures are spread across several countries, including Canada, India, Thailand, and Latin America. His company, TransCard Capital, focuses on real estate investments and financial services, particularly in Cuba's tourism sector. In addition, Dr. Jha’s involvement with Euclid Infotech, an IT services firm with clients in over 100 countries, reflects his ongoing dedication to technology and global business.

Dr. Jha’s approach to business has always been intertwined with his belief in fostering entrepreneurial spirit. He believes that success in business is not about personal wealth but about creating opportunities for others and while there may not be a specific formula for success, certain key elements contribute to it, emphasising hard work, innovation, and perseverance.

Championing education and digital literacy in Nepal

Dr. Jha has never forgotten his roots, and his philanthropic work in Nepal has focused heavily on education and digital literacy. Through the POA Educational Foundation, Dr. Jha has funded the donation of laptops, desktops, and printers to schools in remote parts of Nepal. His belief in the power of technology to transform lives led him to work on a large-scale project to bring computers and digital resources to underserved areas.

In 2024, Dr. Jha’s foundation expanded its efforts by supporting the establishment of mobile libraries across rural Nepal. These libraries aim to provide educational resources to students who have little access to traditional schools, furthering Dr. Jha's belief in the importance of knowledge as a tool for empowerment. His long-term vision is to equip the next generation of Nepalese youth with the skills they need to compete in the global economy.

Nurturing aboriginal entrepreneurs in Canada

Beyond his charitable work in Nepal, Dr. Jha has made significant contributions to indigenous communities in Canada. His Project Beyshick, established in partnership with the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, aims to nurture entrepreneurship among Canadian Aboriginal youth. The project provides mentorship and business training, empowering participants to become leaders in their communities. Dr. Jha’s work with Aboriginal communities is driven by his belief that entrepreneurship can be a powerful force for social change.

His foundation has also created endowments at four Canadian universities—Ryerson, York, Trent, and George Brown—that provide scholarships to students, particularly from Aboriginal communities. These initiatives reflect his commitment to making higher education accessible to all, regardless of background.

Empowering young entrepreneurs globally

A key focus of Dr. Jha’s philanthropy has been to foster the entrepreneurial spirit among youth. In 2016, Jha launched the Aditya Jha/POA Educational Foundation Student Entrepreneur Grant at Ryerson University in Canada. The grant supports students who wish to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, providing them with the financial resources and mentorship necessary to succeed in the competitive business landscape.

Dr. Jha aims to empower young people to shape their futures, explaining that entrepreneurship is about opportunities, and his goal is to equip them with the tools to create something remarkable. His grant program, matched by the Brookfield Institute, provides three students with $6,000 each to launch their business ideas, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to innovate and lead.

A testament to a life of service

Dr. Jha’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In addition to being a Member of the Order of Canada, he has received numerous accolades, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Honorary Doctorate of Laws from Ryerson University, and recognition as one of the Top 25 Canadian Immigrants. These awards reflect Jha’s enduring impact on both the business world and the communities he serves.

Expanding global impact

In 2024, he continues to expand his philanthropic reach. With ongoing efforts in digital literacy, youth entrepreneurship, and indigenous empowerment, Dr. Jha’s vision is to create a global network of empowered individuals capable of driving positive change in their communities. His dedication to education, entrepreneurship, and social equality remains steadfast, with plans to further develop his initiatives in both Canada and Nepal.
